Gil was honored with an Early Career Fellowship by the USGS NCCWSC South Central Climate Science Center.

Gil was awarded travel funds for winning the 2014 Louisiana Sea Grant (NOAA) Coastal Communication Clips competition with his presentation “Corals, Historians of the Sea”.

Gil received the 2014 AAG PhD Presentation Award from the Paleoenvironmental Change Group for his presentation on his research reconstructing precipitation patterns on the island of Barbados from geochemical speleothem archives.

Gil received the 2012-2013 WKU Outstanding Geoscience Student and Graduate Research awards, bestowed by the Department of Geography and Geology and the Ogden College of Science and Engineering.

Gil received a 2010-2011 Alumni Scholars Award from the PSU Department of Geography.
