Gil is an award winning geoscientist whose work focuses broadly on Earth’s fluid systems and their interactions with solid Earth materials, including the co-evolution of land, sea, and sky — past, present, and future. He is passionate about ocean and atmospheric science research; paleo-oceanographic and -climatic sample curation; hydrographic, geographic, and selenographic charting; natural carbonate materials, from coral reef aragonite to speleothem calcite; and science presentation. In addition to serving as the Laboratory’s Principal Investigator, he curates the Marine Geologic Materials Collection.

Gil earned his bachelor of science degree with distinction from the Pennsylvania State University, his master of science degree from Western Kentucky University, and his doctor of philosophy degree from the Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College. He maintains membership in The Oceanography Society, the Past Global Changes (PAGES) consortium, the National Speleological Society, and is past president of the international honors fraternity Gamma Theta Upsilon Eta Psi Chapter.
