Gil is an award winning geoscientist whose work focuses broadly on terrestrial (and other planetary) water and fluid systems; particularly the co-evolution of land, sea, and sky — past, present, and future. He is passionate about ocean and atmospheric science research; paleo-oceanographic and -climatic sample curation; exploring and mapping the ocean; natural carbonate materials (from coral reef aragonite to speleothem calcite); and public science communication. In addition to serving as the Laboratory’s Principal Investigator, he curates the Ocean, Earth, and Interplanetary Materials Collection.

Gil earned his bachelor of science degree with distinction from the Pennsylvania State University, his master of science degree from Western Kentucky University, and his doctor of philosophy degree from the Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College. He maintains membership in The Oceanography Society, the National Speleological Society, and is past president of the international honors fraternity Gamma Theta Upsilon Eta Psi Chapter.
